CEO/Executive Director Statement: Homelessness in America is suddenly becoming very personal... to a LOT of people! It is not always true that if you watch out for others, others will watch out for you. But you are more likely to get out of anything what you put into it, from study to society. And the farthest that anyone is allowed to fall in your society is the farthest that you will be allowed to fall. If no-one is allowed to starve, you will never starve. If it is unacceptable that anyone be outside without shelter, you will never be outside without shelter. If the dignity and civil rights of all persons -- including those who annoy you -- are respected, your own dignity and civil rights are safer. |
Give money, necessities, time, knowledge, labor, friendship, or simply acknowledgement to homeless people.
Do not assume that homeless persons are alike.
There are a number of circumstances that cause a person to become homeless. The shabby person on the street may be the stereotype, but the homeless person may be a woman fleeing a domestic violence situation with her children, someone who is working but unable to make enough to pay the rent. Next time you look at your co-worker, friend, person in line at the store be kind they may be home to the motel.
Support policies that help poor and homeless persons.
Many persons cannot afford housing because the cost of rent is beyond their income level. Often organizations who try to help special populations run into opposition from community groups who say, "Not in my backyard!" You can advocate for more affordable housing for low-income workers and for facilities in your community that help persons who need housing and assistance because of domestic violence, mental illness, and addiction.
Use your talents to help others.
Lawyers can provide free legal help. Medical and dental services can be offered to the homeless at no cost by doctors and dentists. If you are a teacher, you can offer tutoring.
